• Visit the study abroad advisor(s) in the departments you’re considering for your major(s). To find your department’s study abroad advisor, go to http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~overseas/advisors/saadirectory.html. Then get your application in order.
• Be sure to satisfy any prerequisites for the program in which you’re interested, including a minimum 3.0 GPA (for some programs, the GPA requirement is much higher).
• Secure at least two letters of recommendation for your application.
• Complete your study abroad application. The application and instructions are at http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~overseas/students/apply.html.
The last days to apply for study abroad are as follows:
• For most fall programs, Feb. 1, 2010
• For most summer programs, Feb. 15, 2010.
• For most spring programs, May 1, 2010
• Some programs, such as SIT, have earlier deadlines as listed on the Overseas Programs website. Keep in mind Financial aid is available for WashU semester-length programs. If you want to study abroad with a non-Washington University program, and you want to receive academic credit, you must file a petition for approval by the Study Abroad Advisory Board. Petitions for alternative fall and academic year programs must be submitted to the Overseas Programs office no later than February 1 (and preferably before December 1) of the sophomore year. Petitions for alternative spring programs are due May 1. If you do not need academic credit from a study abroad program you may, alternatively, decide to take a Leave of Absence from Washington University to participate in a program at that program’s cost For applications for petitions and leaves of absence, go to http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~overseas/students/apply.html.
