Now that you're a part of the Arts & Sciences community at Washington University, you have an array of special first-year programs to choose from that best match your academic interests. The programs and freshman seminars are optional but strongly encouraged. All of the courses in the programs and the freshman seminars fulfill distribution requirements.
We are committed to making your first-year experience an extraordinary one. Over the past decade, we have devoted considerable creative energy to our first-year programs. The innovations that we have developed for our first-year students — interdisciplinary courses, linked courses, courses designed to help you hone your communication skills, courses that emphasize field study and international experiences — have proved so successful that we have used them as models for numerous upper-level programs.
Our Getting Started book will help you explore your academic options before you arrive on campus. You will see a variety of programs and seminars available only to first-year students in Arts & Sciences. You have the opportunity to apply for the option that interests you and aligns with your academic interests and goals.
Since Getting Started went to press, some additional courses have been added.
